with the exception of the harry potter series and the first narnea movie, hollywood sucks at making movies from books. two of my favorite titles, hunt for red october and the perfect storm, were mediocre movies. perhaps if i had not read the books first, I would have thought differently. In both cases, I think the temptation to use all kinds of special effect trumped the much more exacting and much less flashy job of character building and empathy from the audience.

The all time worst movie from a book I ever saw was gone with the wind. NOw, don't shoot me please. Remember dear reader, that I am older then dirt. When I read gone with the wind, the talking book narrator was a guy who was a star of old time radio named house jameson. That man had rhett butler down perfectly. OOOH!!! Just writing this I'm getting the warmies. Anyway, when I was I guess sixteen or seventeen, on the fourth of july, some friends and I went to see the movie in the theatre. All my life I'd heard how sexy clark gable was. Oh how my mom did swoon recounting his bedroom eyes blah blah blah. As the day for the movie approached I was so-o-o-o excited. then I heard mr gable's voice. Oh barf me!!!!!! Just this mediocre guy. In fact he sounded like one of the counter guys at the lumber yard I visited frequently with my dad. Man, I wanted to get up and walk out, but my seeing friends would not have understood. In my opinion that was the best narrated talking book of all time, and the worst hollywood adaptation.

I watched a few movies that were based on books. Atonement, Girl with a Pearl Earings, P. S. I Love You, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, He's Just Not That Into You. I know a few classic movies from Jane Austen's books and some from Charles Dickens. I guess Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Twilight would be included in the movies I've watched so far. I d rather read the book first before watching the movie. Its different when you read the author's storylines and descriptions compared with how the movie is presented. I like watching adventure, horror and mystery movies rather than reading those.

I liked Charlotte's Web, but otherwise, all the other movies I've seen based off of books haven't been that great. I can't remember any of the others at this time.

PS I love you? Who wrote that I would like to read it.

Depends on whether or not the movie follows the book. Also depends on whether the movie is as good if they decide not to follow the book. In my experience though (generally speaking, not always, but generally), book based movies suck!
"All Quiet On The Western Front" & "Ann Frank" are exceptions though.

a few of the book based movies that i have seen that were well worth watching are pay it forward, although i haven't read this book yet. shawshank redemption was way better as a movie than the novella by stephen king. stand by me for that matter is another movie way better than the stephen king novella. the notebook is much better as a movie. and so is a walk to remember.

I thought they did a pretty good job of turning the green mile from a book to a movie. But in almost all cases, the book is extremely better than the movie. another one, though I'm not sure if the book was written before or after the movie, was waiting to exhale.

waiting to exhale was a book before it was a movie. If you think about it, books and movies are antagonistic. I mean an author has the best camera to work with his and our imagination. The word pictures he/she paints are far more detailed and richer than most things a regular director can accomplish.

I thought most did okay as movies. The Harry Potter ones followed the books pretty closely I think mainly because the author was working with the studio. The Star Wars series did all right as did the Lord of the Rings. As for the Golden Compass, I haven't read the book yet, but I hope its better than the movie. Charlote's web was done well in both versions as was the first Narnia movie.

Twilight, lotr, hp, golden compass, and it and Christeen were all awesome movies!

love Harry Potter, A walk to remember, and The Notebhook, (though I have to read those last two I just mentioned)
I hate Eragon. God, that was awful.
